MWC 2022: Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptops with high-end options

Lenovo’s latest entry-level gaming laptops have a lot in common with the brand’s high-end Legion models, but come at lower price points. The new IdeaPad Gaming 3 and 3i are among the many product announcements of the company made on the occasion of Mobile World Congress. While Legion laptops can cost several thousand dollars, the new IdeaPad Gaming 3 starts at less than $1000, but still has high-end specs and components.

Previous versions in this line looked like basic, generic gaming laptops, but had good components inside for a reasonable price, which made them attractive for work, school, and casual gaming. These new models look more like high-end Legion laptops, but without the Legion branding.

Instead of a more typical clamshell design with a hinge on the back, the new design moves the display hinges up and forward a bit. This accommodates better openings for cooling (with a splash of color) and a rear panel for external displays and power. The design is really practical for a desktop setup, and you still have a USB-A port on the left and right sides for a mouse and other accessories.

Laptops can be equipped with AMD Ryzen 6000 H-series or Intel Core i7 H-series processors – hence the names 3 and 3i, the i corresponding to Intel. They will also be available in 15.6 and 16 inches. The 15-inch has a 16:9 screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, while the 16-inch is 2560×1600 pixels with a 16:10 aspect ratio; they both have refresh rates of up to 165Hz. The 16-inch model’s display will also have a brightness of 500 nits and cover 100% sRGB color gamut.

Regardless of screen size, graphics chip options start with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 and go all the way up to an RTX 3060. However, if you opt for an AMD processor, Lenovo says the RTX 3050 Ti will be the best option available. Intel configurations will also be able to carry an Intel Arc A370M GPU. The first benchmark leaks show that the Arc graphics chip has performances close to those of a GeForce GTX 1650 Super GPU, therefore rather entry-level.

The 15.6-inch IdeaPad Gaming 3 will be available in black or white. The keyboard of the black model has a white backlight, while that of the white version will have a blue backlight. That’s the difference with more expensive gaming laptops that sometimes offer highly customizable multi-color backlights. AMD configurations will arrive in May for $930. Intel configurations will start at $990 in April.

The 16-inch version will only come in black with the white backlit keyboard, but Lenovo says a four-zone RGB backlit keyboard will be available as an option, allowing you to enjoy a bit of customization. The 16-inch IdeaPad Gaming 3i will start at $1490, while the AMD version will be around $1140. Both are expected in June.
